The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced in June 2015 that it will require a two-year recall of Cialis, which contains a similar drug named Sildenafil, to be removed from the market. Sildenafil is used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED), which can cause damage to the penis and heart. FDA approved Cialis (tadalafil) in 1998 and Sildenafil in 2003. Sildenafil is available in a generic form and is the same drug that is marketed in Australia.
Cialis was the first drug to be approved for the treatment of ED, which has been approved for over 50 years. FDA also approved tadalafil (the generic version of Cialis) in 2015 to treat ED. Cialis has been approved for use in men only since June 2015.
The FDA said that it will continue to follow the recommendations of its experts and will issue Cialis for sale only to consumers that have been diagnosed with ED. Cialis is not approved for use in women.
“This decision is important for all consumers, including those who have been diagnosed with ED,” said Janet Woodcock, director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.
“FDA’s determination that Cialis will not be recalled is the result of an urgent and important public health challenge.”
FDA will continue to review the safety and efficacy of Cialis as well as the benefits and risks of taking the drug and will update its product information as needed to reflect the latest information.
Cialis is currently being marketed as a treatment for ED. Viagra and Cialis are both drugs approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
FDA is also reviewing whether consumers should be able to purchase drugs that contain nitrates (such as nitroglycerine) for heart conditions.
